Tintinnidium fluviatile (Stein, 1863), Kent, 1881
Tintinnidium fluviatile, a planktonic ciliate with a relative soft lorica. (3)
Tintinnidium fluviatile: same specimen as above; upper image:the arrow points to the anlage for the new daughter oral apparatus, indicating that this specimen is dividing. Lower imge: crop. (3)
Tintinnidium fluviatile: another specimen from (1)
Tintinnidium fluviatile: when disturbed, the ciliate either retracts into the lorica (as shown in these images, or it may leave the lorica (see image below); focus plane on the stalk with which the ciliate is attached to the lorica. (2)
Tintinnidium fluviatile: swimming specimen. Focus plane on the oral apparatus. (2)
Tintinnidium fluviatile may be confused with Codonella cratera, which also has a lorica, but which looks amphora-like. C. cratera has 2 macronulei, whereas T. fluviatile has only 1.
